Last Saturday, we headed off to Berlin for five days. This was my first time in the German Capital & I can’t wait to start exploring! It will be our first trip to 2018, if you don’t count our flight back to Budapest on New Year’s Day. With so many things to see & do in a new city, I started planning a few weeks before the trip. These are some of my favourite ways to plan a trip!
Pick a Destination
When planning a trip, the first thing I do is log into Skyscanner. This has to be one of my favourite websites, as you can search for specific flights, hotels, etc or you can enter the “Everywhere” option & it will show you the cheapest place at the given time you have chosen. If your schedule is even more flexible, you can even choose a whole month for the cheapest price for any destination. During the month of February, we have 1 week off work, which is considered a “ski break”, so we had specific dates in mind. I knew that I wanted to travel somewhere, not too sure where, but preferably somewhere new. Skyscanner showed me that the cheapest destination was Berlin & our flights costed us $20 CAD each, with Wizz Air. This was the first time both Matt & I decided to just book it right away, despite not having any plans or a hotel booked. For $20, how can I pass up this opportunity!?
My least favourite part when it comes to planning a trip, would have to be finding accommodation. There are so many websites to choose from. I usually start by comparing prices between Airbnb & Hotels. However, most of the time we end up choosing a hotel. One of my favourite websites to use when finding a hotel, is Trivago. I love the fact that they are always able to find the cheapest price, through any website. Whether its through another travel search engine, or the Hotel’s own website. Once I find a hotel I am interested in, I compare the prices through other sites to make sure I got the best deal possible. And it is always the case!
Finding things to do.
When visiting a new city, it can be difficult finding the time and things to do during your trip. My favourite ways to find activities, places to see & eat is by searching TripAdvisor. There are so many reviews & recommendations to read. After finding those things, I write them in my planner. If you have limited time during your trip, it is best to schedule your days & prioritize what you want to see & do.
- When flying with a budget airline, try booking Priority. You’ll get to enter the plane first & are guaranteed a space for your carry-on in the overhead compartment. Recently, Ryanair & Wizz changed their policies & you will only be guaranteed both if booking Priority.
- Search Pinterest for some more travel inspiration, when you’ve chosen your destination.
- Download “Citymapper” or “Google Maps”, which will help you with all things directions. With Google Maps, you can also download maps, for when you don’t have any internet.
- Pack accordingly, it is definitely hard to pack however you don’t want to pay those ridiculous overweight prices. Check out my Travel Checklist here.
